Chapter 11

Jeannie sat on a bench next to Jason in the reception area of Colonel Armstrong's office. They'd been waiting for almost half an hour. Laura had told them the colonel was busy and couldn't see visitors at the moment, but Jeannie had a feeling the obstinate man was delaying talking with them on purpose. He was probably hoping she'd get tired of waiting and leave so he wouldn't have to deal with her again. If that was the case, Armstrong had better think again. She could be every bit as stubborn as that old coot, and she wasn't leaving until she'd pleaded her case before him again. This time, she refused to leave empty-handed.

As she bided her time awaiting an audience with 'His Excellency,' Jeannie tried to focus on positive, calming thoughts. She was determined to play the consummate diplomat and not lose her cool again. Closing her eyes and taking a few deep, relaxing breaths, she allowed herself to recall her first visit here. Although she'd been too worked up then to take much notice of her surroundings, she did remember the colonel having several framed photos on his desk and filing cabinets. Jeannie herself took photos of her family with her whenever she was away from home, so she hoped that meant that under all the piss and vinegar, the colonel was a devoted family man. When she focused her concentration, she vaguely recalled a photo on the shelf behind his desk having a dog in it too, which likely meant he wasn't as hard-hearted toward animals as he seemed, a fact that she wasn't ashamed to exploit to further her cause. As she continued her deep breathing, all the pieces of the puzzle that was Colonel Armstrong began to sort themselves out in her mind, coalescing into a plan to win him over to her way of thinking.

Laura's feminine voice broke into her scheming. “Colonel Armstrong will see you now, Miss Montgomery.”

Jeannie opened her eyes and gave the other woman a placid smile before following her to the colonel's office. This time, the man didn't rise to greet her. He merely gave her a bland look from his position behind the big oak desk and motioned for her take a seat in the chair across from him.

He simply stated, “You again.”

“Yes, Colonel Armstrong, it's me again.” Jeannie gave him one of the bright smiles that usually worked when she needed to charm a difficult person. “Look, I know we didn't exactly get off on the right foot the last time I was here, and I hope you'll accept my apology for that.”

“Of course, Ms. Montgomery,” he said with a conciliatory nod of his head. “But I thought I made myself clear the last time we spoke that there's nothing I can do to help you.”

“Yes, sir, that is what you said.”

“Well, then, it seems we don't have much to talk about.”

Anger began to bubble up in her chest at his curt dismissal, but she ruthlessly tamped it down to reply politely.
